CHITTLEHAMHOLT STINK
This is a request to all residents in Chittlehamholt to continue to report
every occurrence of sewage smells to South West Water (SWW).
It is vital that we keep the pressure on SWW so that they take action sooner rather than later.
If we stop reporting the smells, then SWW will assume the situation is improving.
There are a number of ways to report these smell incidents to SWW:
1. via WhatsApp on their website
2. via SWW Customer Services on 0344 346 1010
The Environment Agency have also made available a ‘Smell Diary’ in which you can record every time you smell sewage and how bad it was. These will be given to those already affected but if you wish to have one, please contact Sue Williams at Searles (01769 540270). The working party that has been set up will be collating these each week and sending to SWW.
It is very important to keep reporting the ‘stink’.
On behalf of the Chittlehamholt Stink Working Party and the Parish Council.

THE VILLAGE SHOP
I come! I come! and the waving field
Its wealth of golden grain shall yield.
In the hush and heat of glowing noon,
The insects' hum is the only tune;
For the merriest birds forget to sing,
And sit in the shade with drooping wing.
But see! how the purpling grapes hang high,
And ripen beneath my sunny sky!
And see! how the fruits of the bending tree
Turn blushing and rosy cheeks to me!
And soon shall your garners be over-full /
With gifts from the August bountiful.

LOCAL NEWS & EVENTS

The Annual Village Flower Show is the event that says the summer is hopefully arriving, and to be ready for hotter weather we have added to the Marshfield Farm ice creams available in the shop with 500ml Cookie Dough Clotted Cream tubs.
The new dairy products are selling well, and the stock levels are holding up as we had hoped.
Our own brand cookies and cakes are as popular as ever, and we also have a selection of chutneys that are perfect additions to summer picnics and BBQs.
We are still looking at new options for some of our key products and will keep refreshing our lines throughout the year. If anyone has a suggestion for a new product for us to stock, please leave the information with one of the volunteers.
As ever, many thanks to all our customers for continuing to support the Shop and thanks to our team of volunteers for making it all work so well. However, this month we have to announce a difficult situation with the shop. As we mentioned a few months ago a long-standing volunteer has retired from the regular rota. We have been managing to cover that gap, but we are now at the point that it is unsustainable going forward. As a result, unless we can find a new volunteer to cover 2 hours on Monday afternoons, we will have to close the shop on Monday afternoons starting 1 September 2024.
If anyone in the Parish would like to join our team then please contact a committee member or leave a message in the shop with one of the volunteers.
On 11th July, 15 members of the Gardening Club paid their postponed June visit to Backswood Farm Garden near Bickleigh. With wonderful far-reaching views to the highest points of both Dartmoor and Exmoor, it has many architectural features designed to encourage wildlife. It was a hard task to keep the 2 dogs which came along out of all the water features. A week later (18th July) 11 members visited Whiddon Goyle, at Whiddon Down, looking directly onto Dartmoor. The cut-flower and vegetable gardens were a particular highlight, as well as the mature trees, shrubs, croquet lawn and quiet corners. Special mention for the chocolate tiffin
served at tea-time.
There will be no Garden Club meeting in August
WARKLEIGH, SATTERLEIGH AND CHITTLEHAMHOLT
HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY SUMMER SHOW
SATURDAY JULY 27TH
Warkleigh, Satterleigh and Chittlehamholt Horticultural Society 98th Summer Show was held on Saturday 27th July. It was lovely to see so many people enjoying the show, sports and dog show. With over 350 entries the show benches looked amazing - thank you to everyone who entered something. We were pleased to see many old friends, but also a number of new ones and we hope that if this was your first time it will not be your last. The cuddly donkey (whose name was Pele) was won by Helen Peters, and the hamper by Irene Anning. The 99th Summer Show will be held on Saturday 26th July 2025.

The hall committee held its AGM on the 24th July and the meeting was well attended by parishioners keen to hear about the upgrades to the hall, plans for future events (see below), and how the finances are faring in what has been quite challenging times for many halls. Ideas were also presented for additional use of the hall ranging from an "adults youth club" with various facilities being made available such as table tennis, darts and pool, bingo evenings & dance lessons: watch this space for news on this over the coming months.
On the subject of activities, we are looking to purchase 1 or 2 table tennis tables for the hall. If anyone has a table tennis table (preferably folding) that they no longer need or want, please let one of the committee members know.
All current committee members agreed to continue in
their roles for another year (thankfully), but all the committee would love to be joined by some new volunteers.
More immediately, we have the next coffee morning set for Wednesday 14th August in the hall. This will be followed by the September coffee morning on Wednesday 11th September where, back by popular demand, will be Barbara with her pop-up Vanilla Black clothes shop. This is looking to run from 10am until 2pm, so come along early to avoid disappointment!
Looking even further ahead we have a comedy night booked with Rob Barrett (poet, comedian, and singer) on Friday 8th November.
Future dates for your diary are a remembrance event on Sunday 10th November and a Christmas lunch set for Wednesday 11th December.
Thursday Craft Group
There will be no craft group on Thursday the 29th of August. The craft group will begin again on Thursday 26th of September 1.00 -4.00pm. We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported the craft group
10 a.m - 12p.m in Village Hall every 2nd Wednesday of the month. Coffee, tea, cakes, pastries - and a chance to have a chat and a laugh. Do join us!

VILLAGE CRAFT GROUP |
NO craft group in August BUT... we usually meet on the last Thursday of each month from 1pm to 4pm, to pursue our various crafts, and to have a chat etc and a laugh. Bring your craft and join us. To avoid the need to staff the kitchen brings the beverage of your choice. A small charge of £2.50 each is required to cover the cost of the village hall. All are welcome.
